Opening 23 July 2006, the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennial 2006 involves 200 artists from 40 countries with the purpose of revitalizing the connection between nature, art and community in six municipalities of Echigo-Tsumari. Tsumari is an excavation site for pottery from the Jomon period, and this festival is part of the initiative to reintroduce art and the pottery tradition. Artists working in collaboration with local communities will make installations ranging from architecture to performance in tandem with local traditional festivities.

This year four Australian artists will participate, each artist working in a different part of the region:

Anne Graham will cook with local people and display work made by Australian artists in an old fishing hut.

Ben Morrison will work with locals in a drawing event using remote controlled cars.

Sue Pedley will construct a large-scale outdoor work using woollen fabric and a wooden structure for drying rice. The wool will use colourful woollen threads for designs based on traditional farming and fibrous domestic objects.

And Darwin based Indonesian artist Dadang Christanto, whose project is yet to advocate for the victims of oppression and social injustice, artistic palette ranges through painting, drawing, performance, sculpture and installations.

He does larger-than-life sculptures as monuments to displaced victims as a form of communal grief.
