The year 2006 is the 30th anniversary of the signing of the Basic Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation between Australia and Japan. To commemorate this year, "Australia-Japan Dance Exchange (AJdX) 2006", a project which furthers relations between the two countries through dance. The program consists of:
- Produce collaborative dance pieces with artists and companies from both countries.
- Produce pieces by one country's choreographer for the other country's dancers.
- Host exchange projects between young choreographers and performing venues.
- Introduce Australian dances, circuses, and physical theaters to Japanese audiences.
Artists will stay in the locations during the creative process (artist-in-residence) to deepen their understanding. Locations in Japan are Yokohama, Kanazawa, Kyoto, Osaka, Yamaguchi, Matsuyama, and in Australia are Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Townsville. Performances are scheduled at each of the locations as well.

LUCY/KOTA Project
After auditioning dancers Yamazaki Kota and Lucy Guerin will then rehearse with Yamazaki in Melbourne and Lucy in Kyoto and Yamaguchi. Both productions will perform in Kyoto and Yamaguchi, followed by a performance at the Melbourne International Festival.

KINOKO Project
A collaboration between Australian interior designer Justin Caleo and contemporary Japanese dance company Strange Kinoko, who will rehearse at the Meat Market in North Melbourne for a month and will make a performance in a Japanese guest house in Kanazawa.

CIRCUS Project
From Brisbane this will be the first trip to Japan for CIRCA, a company which has brought new life and style to the Australian circus world, giving hitherto unknown experiences for its audiences. It will also give workshops during the tour.
